Stress, as essential as it is harmful

A busy life, increasing responsibilities, goals to overcome and achieve, social activities, work all take their toll on us. The most important question is, how much does this affect us?

Emotional exhaustion, lack of energy, tiredness, fatigue, constant headaches, insomnia, irritability are just some of the symptoms of stress that we suffer from. Stress is a state of mental fatigue caused by the demand for a much higher than normal performance; it is a feeling of physical and emotional tension.

Stress, although it sounds contradictory, is essential for development and response to pressure because in small episodes, stress can be positive. For example when it helps to avoid danger or meet a deadline. However, at high levels or without proper management, it can be harmful because the body is always alert and can cause wear and tear and the presence of negative symptoms for one’s own health, such as diarrhea, constipation, sexual problems, poor memory, drug and alcohol abuse, among others.

This condition can be very dangerous, but remember that there are many ways you can manage stress, some are so simple that they can become part of our routines, including: Recognize that we cannot change everything and that we have limits.

Recognize the source of stress, and of course, if we can get away from it. Change your perspective. Try to develop a more positive attitude in the face of
challenges. You can do this by replacing negative thoughts with more positive thoughts. Exercise and practice healthy habits such as a balanced diet, adequate sleep and pleasant activities.

Learn to say ‘no’, a very healthy way to take care of ourselves and manage stress is not to submit to social pressure to look good in front of others, assertively not facilitating the activities that we do want and avoiding those that are not pleasant for us.

We can learn relaxation and breathing activities that we can practice at all times, in this way we learn to manage our thoughts and avoid actions that we do not want. Always keep in mind that there are many factors that you will not be able to control and eliminating stress is very difficult, but proper management of it will allow an adequate and healthy lifestyle for our health, both physical and mental.
